Cooker hoods

A ducted hood expels air outside and is more effective, provided there is an outlet. In recirculation mode it filters odours through activated carbon, with filters to replace regularly. The hood should be at least as wide as the hob, and high extraction power is of little use if the noise keeps you on the lowest setting. Dishwasher-safe metal filters make upkeep easier.

Extraction power
This measures the maximum airflow the hood can extract: the longer the bar, the faster it clears smoke and odours.
Noise level
This measures the noise produced at full power: the longer the bar, the quieter the hood stays in the kitchen.
Number of speeds
This counts the available extraction speeds: the longer the bar, the easier it is to adjust suction to each dish.
Energy consumption
This measures the energy used over a year of operation: the longer the bar, the less the hood weighs on the electricity bill.
Lighting
This counts the bulbs lighting the cooking area: the longer the bar, the better the dishes are lit during preparation.
Price
This compares the price found to the rest of the market: the longer the bar, the better value the hood is.

€100 to €300

Stronger airflow and quieter operation, with washable metal grease filters and sometimes a decorative or canopy style design.

Over €300

Island or designer hood with high airflow and near silent running even on higher settings, featuring touch controls and easily removable filters.

The buying guide for this category Buying guide: how to choose a cooker hood A cooker hood is chosen first for its ability to extract stale air without filling the kitchen with noise, then for the flexibility of its speed settings and how little electricity it draws. Lighting over the cooking zone rounds out these criteria, well before price comes into play. Read the guide
