Smart home hubs and voice assistants

A hub or voice assistant acts as a conductor: its value lies in the range of devices and protocols it can control. A hub that works locally keeps responding when the internet drops, whereas many assistants rely on an online service. On a device with a microphone, a physical mute switch is reassuring. Speaker quality matters mainly if the device will also play music.
